Children respond well to routine and familiarity, so it is a good idea to take your child’s familiar sleeping environment with you when you travel. There is no need to take travel cots and lots of kit. While camping, your child will be having the time of their life, so will absolutely love snuggling up in their own cosy sleeping bag just like everyone else.
Camping can be the ultimate way to spend quality time with your children. However, we all know how grumpy and irritable we can be without a good night’s sleep, so it is important these issues are thought through before you go. Of course, it is Ok to stay up a little later in the summer and it is fine to relax your timings and routine a little to fit in with the camping itinery. However, it is helpful to keep the familiar structure for bedtime and provide the same comforting sleep cues as they will help everyone enjoy their camping experience more.
How about a torchlit or moonlit magical bedtime story, for example? Things like this will help your infant to look forward to bedtime. If you have older children in your family group, this could be something they take it in turns to do.
Camping generally means spending a lot more time outdoors, exploring, playing, having fun and not being on electronic devices. For this reason, you may find your child is more tired than normal. If you aren’t also completely wiped out, that’s when it is lovely to sit outside the tent and enjoy a warm drink under the stars!
